Many understand that Facebook emoticons are essential in expressing one’s emotion, intent, tone of voice, mood, etc in online conversation. Did you mean to be sarcastic? Did you intend a statement as a joke? Emoticons help make the message clear.

But do you know that smileys emoticons can be used to tell a story, too?

You may not be aware of it, but sometimes you use an emoticon to replace a sentence or an entire comment. For instance, instead of writing out “That was funny” when a friend tells a funny anecdote, you just send a smiling face or a laughing emoticon. As a story is composed of a string of words or sentences, then you can basically tell one by stringing emoticons.

If you can replace a sentence with an emoticon, you can also do it with words, emotions, expressions, and persons.

Now that you’re armed with this knowledge, you are ready to weave a story using Facebook emoticons.

However, given the limited number and variety of Facebook emoticons, you have, in effect, a few resources to use for your storytelling. To expand the range of your choices, your best option is to download emoticons for Facebook from other sites.  Some emoticon apps offer cop emoticon, party-goer emoticon, emoticon that’s rolling on the floor and laughing out loud, emoticon that’s fuming red with rage, a bawling emoticon, and many more. The more options you have, the easier and more fun it would be to tell a story.

But what stories can you tell using smileys emoticons? Anything that catches your fancy. There are no rules to storytelling, so you can tell anything under the sun. It can be imagined, or it can be based on a real event in your life. It can be funny or it can be sad.

Your story can be as short as a single line or it can extend to a single page. You can write a long story if you like, although the trend is for short ones. You are only limited by your imagination and the smileys emoticons available.

You will find many short/flash stories on the web that use emoticons, but the most popular one is Rives’ 3-minute story of varied emoticons. TED didn’t use any word, but he did provide audio narration to bridge some gaps and make the pictures form a more coherent and comprehensible whole.

Rives’ is one way of telling a story, but there are other ways of telling a story using emoticons without the aid of audio narration.

  1. First, write the story. Then find the emoticons to replace the words/sentences/emotions/expressions to illustrate your story.
  2. You insert words to bridge the gaps between the emoticons and make the story more comprehensible.
  3. Use emoticons only.
  4. Use emoticons only, but add a narrative at the bottom.

There are many ways you can tell a story, but the above are some of the most commonly used ones. You can even add illustrations to the emoticons (e.g. add a female body to the Smiley face).  Whatever style you use, telling a story is more fun when you use Facebook emoticons.
